Best European Weekend Getaways for October

October is one of my favourite months for a short European escape. The busiest summer period has passed, temperatures are usually more comfortable, and many cities begin to take on a more atmospheric autumn character.
For a weekend trip, I think the destination matters even more than usual. You want somewhere compact, easy to navigate and interesting enough to fill two or three days without spending half the trip in transit.
For this list, I have focused on European cities that work particularly well for a short October break. Some offer mild weather, others are better for food, culture or autumn scenery, but all of them can be enjoyed without needing a full week.
1. Valencia, Spain
Valencia is one of the best choices if you want a weekend that still feels slightly summery.
The city combines a historic centre, a long urban beach and striking modern architecture, so it is easy to build a varied itinerary without travelling far.
I would spend the first day around the Old Town, visiting the Central Market, Valencia Cathedral and the streets around Plaça de la Reina. On the second day, head towards the City of Arts and Sciences before finishing near the beach.
October is especially appealing because the weather is generally more comfortable for sightseeing than in midsummer, while outdoor dining still feels natural.
For a short break, Valencia gives you a good balance of culture, food and coastal atmosphere.

2. Trieste, Italy
Trieste feels very different from many other Italian cities.
Its architecture reflects a strong Central European influence, and the city sits directly beside the Adriatic, giving it a distinctive mix of waterfront scenery, grand cafés and elegant squares.
Start around Piazza Unità d’Italia, then walk along the waterfront before exploring the historic cafés that are such an important part of Trieste’s identity.
I would also include Miramare Castle, which sits just outside the centre and can easily be visited during a weekend.
October works well because the cooler weather suits long walks, and the city feels more atmospheric once the peak summer season has ended.

3. Gdańsk, Poland
Gdańsk is a strong option for travellers who want history, architecture and a walkable waterfront.
The reconstructed historic centre is colourful and easy to explore on foot. I would begin along Long Market before continuing towards the Motława River and the old port area.
The city has enough museums and indoor attractions to make it a good October destination even if the weather is unpredictable.
For a two- or three-day trip, Gdańsk works especially well because the main sights are concentrated in a relatively compact area.
If you have extra time, nearby Sopot can be added for a coastal walk and a change of pace.

4. Colmar, France
Colmar is one of the most photogenic autumn destinations in eastern France.
Its half-timbered houses, canals and narrow streets already feel storybook-like, but October gives the surrounding Alsace region an extra layer of colour.
I would spend one full day simply exploring the historic centre, especially the area around Little Venice. The second day can be used for a short trip into the surrounding wine villages.
Colmar is small, which makes it ideal for a weekend. You do not need a long checklist of attractions because the appeal is largely in the atmosphere.
October is also a natural time to experience Alsatian food, wine and harvest-season traditions.

5. Lucerne, Switzerland
Lucerne is a great choice for travellers who want scenery without committing to a long mountain itinerary.
The Old Town sits beside Lake Lucerne, with mountains rising directly behind the city. The Chapel Bridge is the obvious starting point, but I would also spend time walking along the lakefront and through the historic streets.
If the weather is clear, use part of the second day for a mountain excursion or boat journey.
October can be unpredictable, but that is part of the appeal. On clear days, the combination of lake, mountains and autumn colour is exceptional.
Lucerne works especially well for a slower, more scenic weekend rather than a packed sightseeing trip.

6. Thessaloniki, Greece
Thessaloniki is one of my favourite options for a food-focused autumn weekend.
The city feels lively throughout the year, and October usually brings more comfortable temperatures for walking along the waterfront and exploring the historic centre.
I would start around Aristotelous Square, continue towards the White Tower and then explore the upper neighbourhoods around Ano Poli.
Food is a major part of the experience. Leave plenty of time for bakeries, meze, seafood and long evening meals rather than treating dining as something to fit between attractions.
For a short trip, Thessaloniki feels relaxed but never boring, making it a strong choice for travellers who prefer atmosphere over a long list of major sights.

7. Girona, Spain
Girona is compact, historic and very easy to enjoy over a weekend.
Its medieval centre is filled with narrow streets, stone staircases and colourful buildings beside the Onyar River. I would begin by walking the old city walls before exploring the Jewish Quarter and the area around the cathedral.
October is especially pleasant because the temperatures are better suited to walking than in peak summer.
Girona also works well for food lovers, with a strong restaurant scene despite the city’s relatively small size.
If you have a third day, the surrounding Catalan countryside or nearby medieval villages can easily be added.

8. Innsbruck, Austria
Innsbruck is ideal for travellers who want to combine a city break with mountain scenery.
The centre is small enough to explore in a single day, with the Golden Roof, colourful riverside buildings and historic streets all within easy reach.
What makes Innsbruck special is how quickly you can reach the mountains. Cable cars and viewpoints give you a completely different experience without needing to leave the city for long.
October can bring a mixture of autumn colours and early hints of winter at higher elevations.
I would choose Innsbruck for a weekend that feels active and scenic rather than purely cultural.

9. Nantes, France
Nantes is a more unusual choice, but that is exactly why I think it works well for a short break.
The city combines historic architecture with creative public spaces, contemporary art and an industrial past that has been reimagined in interesting ways.
The Château des ducs de Bretagne is one of the main landmarks, while the Île de Nantes gives the city a completely different character.
October is a good time to explore on foot without the heat of summer, and the city’s cafés and indoor cultural spaces make it easy to adapt if the weather changes.
Nantes is especially suitable for travellers who have already visited France’s more famous cities.

10. Wrocław, Poland
Wrocław is colourful, lively and compact enough for a weekend.
The Market Square is the natural starting point, surrounded by historic façades and restaurants. From there, I would walk towards Cathedral Island and spend time along the Oder River.
One of the fun details of the city is the hundreds of small bronze dwarf statues scattered around the streets. Finding them turns even an ordinary walk into part of the sightseeing.
Autumn adds extra colour to the riverside areas and parks, while cooler evenings make the city’s cafés and restaurants feel especially inviting.
For a short break, Wrocław offers a good balance of architecture, food and relaxed city wandering.

How to Choose the Right October Weekend Getaway
If you want the mildest weather, I would look first at Valencia, Thessaloniki or Girona.
For autumn scenery, Lucerne, Innsbruck and Colmar stand out.
Trieste, Gdańsk and Wrocław are stronger choices if you enjoy historic architecture and slower city exploration, while Nantes is ideal for something a little less obvious.
The best destination also depends on how you like to travel. For a weekend, I usually prefer somewhere where I can walk almost everywhere and avoid complicated transfers.
Tips for a Short European Weekend in October
For two- or three-day trips, staying centrally is worth paying a little more for. Saving time on transport can make a major difference when the trip is short.
I also recommend arriving as early as possible on the first day and avoiding an overpacked schedule.
October weather can change quickly, so bring a light waterproof layer and plan at least one indoor option for each day.
Finally, do not try to see everything. A good weekend trip should feel enjoyable, not rushed.

Final Thoughts
October is one of the best months for a European weekend getaway because it gives you more variety than almost any other season.
You can still find mild weather in Spain or Greece, enjoy autumn colours in Switzerland and Austria, or spend a slower cultural weekend in Poland, France or Italy.
My main advice is to choose a city that fits the way you want to travel. If you only have two or three days, walkability, atmosphere and easy access matter more than the number of attractions.
Sometimes the best weekend is simply a beautiful city, good food and enough time to explore without a strict plan.
